Darling where'd you go?

I’ve haven’t had the time to blog as much as I’d like thanks in part to now having a full time job (thanks for the inspiration Dave Pederson). But since the new video from The Pierces was released I was moved to bring it to your attention. It makes me die! Rarely does an act actually release one of my favourite tracks off their record and rarer still does the video live up to the track but The Pierces have done this with their video for It Will Not Be Forgotten. Thanks for living my dream Alison and Catherine. Now if only I could find a job where I can waft about the woods like a nymph I’d have much more time to blog…

It's time you had the talk...

Check out Robyn’s amazing new video Call Your Girlfriend. It’s essentially the dance routine from Papa Don’t Preach, with the Doug E. Fresh and the Mashed Potato thrown in for good measure. I especially love it because Madonna's Papa Don’t Preach routine is pretty much my go to dance when drunk. Enjoy.

You're the one I'm dreaming of...

I’ve just been reminded of how much I love Madonna’s True Blue album, while at the mercy of my iPod’s shuffle all songs function. I first heard True Blue sung by a red coat on holiday at Butlins, in a sort of nightclub for kids that had a cabaret show and fruity virgin cocktails with plastic mermaids in the glass. It was all very classy, and sophisticated entertainment for a 6 year old. You can imagine my disappointment when I finally stepped into a real nightclub a decade later...

You tell 'em Maureen!

You don’t want to piss off Margaret Cho’s butch lesbian alter ego Maureen. For my sake I’m  glad her neighbours did when they had her RV towed. The result was the hilarious My Puss, a diss song taken from her album Cho Dependent. Check out My Puss below, and some more hilarity from Cho Dependent under the cut.

My New Theme Tune!

Lady GaGa is certainly pulling out all the stops to win back my love. If last week’s offering, the anthemic Pat Benatar-y gem The Edge of Glory wasn’t enough,  this week’s release is all about my favourite subject, Hair.

Musically it’s kinda in the same vein as Edge including that sexy sax and lyrics like “I don't wanna change, and I don't wanna be ashamed. I'm the spirit of my Hair, it's all the glory that I bare. I am my hair.”

It’s like it’s been written just for me. So cheers for the theme tune Lady! I’m officially back in love with you.

Glorious

God bless the world it’s so glorious. The Pierces’ words not mine, taken from their latest single Glorious. Check out the accompanying video below. I can’t wait to see them again in June, I’ll be the one front and centre with a tambourine and a daisy chain around my head. Too much?

New GaGa. Vintage Tori. Just because...

More new GaGa in the form of her latest radio single The Edge of Glory. It’s kind of like Kelly Clarkson’s My Life Would Suck Without You, by way of Bonnie Tyler, with some mean Kenny G –esque sax. All this 80’s power balladry is making Y Kant Tori Read seem super fresh right now, to me at least. And for no reason other than the words Edge and Boundary are kind of in the same vein, it made me think of On the Boundary by Y Kant Tori Read.

I know that you (my tens of loyal readers) have come to rely on me as a barometer of good taste, but you don’t have to take my word for it, you can check out On the Boundary below. For maximum listening pleasure I suggest you don some sort of satin shirt, tie it at the waist, go mad with the hairspray, stand in front of a fan and play it on full blast. You’re welcome.

Ok fine, I’m in love with Judas too…

I caved and bought the Judas single on Friday. On first listen I was initially unimpressed by it, but it slowly grew on me, and by grew on me I mean it's just so damn catchy that it’s literally been stuck in my head since that first listen. Plus, I needed something thumpy and loud to pump me up for a night out and the after dark walk through Hackney to catch the bus. With Judas playing in my ears, I was totally prepared to have a Beat It style dance fight with any gang of hoodlums that want to be starting something. Then this happened…

Jen Pez I'm into You

I’m obsessed with the new Jennifer Lopez video I’m into You. I can’t tell you how it goes because at this point I feel the music is surplus to requirements but the video is classic Jen Pez. In fact it’s probably best played on mute with any of the below carefully selected tracks playing in the background. But oh lord, the hair, the fashion, the beauty the glamour and most importantly the completely unrelated dance break all just make me die. It’s Jennifer Lopez at her writhing around on a beach best and it makes me want to wrap my hair in a turban and catch a plane to Mexico. Muy caliente!

Option 2: Nellie McKay - Politan

All that she wants is to make love to you?

Or so I thought. I was rocking out to Heart in my car the other day when All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You came on and I became baffled when singing the lyric ‘You can imagine his surprise when he saw his own eyes.’ “What could this mean?” I thought “A mirrored ceiling perhaps?”  That’s some freaky shiz for early 90’s top 40. So I YouTubed the video which in classic Hair anthem style was super literal.  She was just boning that lonely boy in the rain to get pregnant because her husband is infertile, of course!

Same Director?

I'm heavy into Hair Rock at the moment, and it's my belief that there is a Tori Amos song for every occasion. On this occasion that song would be The Big Picture. Fitting, as it's my last day working at Big Pictures.  I couldn't help but notice that a certain Phoebe Buffay may have used the same director/treatment for her Smelly Cat video. See for yourself.

On a side note, how sick is Tori's hair in this video? That's so my next look. You know what they say 'The higher the hair, the closer to God.'

We could count the teardrops in our eyes...

Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge by The Pierces definitely makes it into my top ten records of all time. If the EPs that The Pierces have released so far this year are any indication their follow up record You & I released May 30th it's shaping up to to be up there along side it.

I can’t tell you how much I love the single You’ll Be Mine, the video was released the day I went to see them for the first time when they played Bush Hall earlier this year. I ripped it off YouTube* and played it on repeat till I got there so I’d know it, you know, just in case one of them were sick and I had to step in...

My heart is cryin' Indian and I'm begging for more…

I’m dangerously close to being the person that’s issued with an ASBO for playing too much Cher. And here’s why; Cher is my pharmaceutical free antidepressant. I just got off the phone with a friend who, without wishing to undermine her situation, is in a somewhat of a funk. It’s my personal belief that you can’t actually feel depressed while listening to (selected*) Cher songs. Part of the elation I feel when listening to these songs comes from the sheer embarrassment factor of loving them so much and the other part is from the ridiculous awesomeness of them.

Un, dos, tres…

Once every decade I fall a little bit in love with Ricky Martin. For about five to fifteen minutes every said decade I remember the classic hit that is Maria. I don’t speak Spanish so I’m not entirely sure what he’s singing about but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say he’s counting to three and, um... he really likes this Maria chick’s shoes?

Thanks to Spotify and hours to kill I rediscovered this little gem along with five or so of his other ‘greatest hits’ which I listen to in the office unabashedly (as soon as everyone leaves). So as soon as my boss leaves tonight I’m going to be listening to this loud and on repeat.

I’m (no longer) on fire

I’m no longer feverish or delirious and my brain is functioning at about 75% capacity. I’m firing on some cylinders, not all but some, which is better than none. Anyway, my elevated temperature made me think of this song. It’s not about the flu so that’s where my diminished brain capacity excuses me. I could have gone for ‘Caught a Lite Sneeze’ but that would have belittled my condition so I give to you Tori Amos singing Springsteen’s ‘I'm on Fire.’

Carry me...

In a flu fuelled burst of frustration I decided to start blogging. Feeling tired, whiny and pathetic reminded me of a time at the age of three, on holiday in Corfu, my Mum encouraged me to sing this song to distract me from feeling tired on the long walk back from the beach. And sing it I did, over and over all the way home. Since then it has come to be my theme tune in overcoming feelings of whininess or self pity. It is after all a truly outrageous song.

Divine Inspiration

While I wait for divine inspiration, as to what to do on here next, keep yourselves amused with the below Róisín Murphy video...
