I’ve just been reminded of how much I love Madonna’s True Blue album, while at the mercy of my iPod’s shuffle all songs function. I first heard True Blue sung by a red coat on holiday at Butlins, in a sort of nightclub for kids that had a cabaret show and fruity virgin cocktails with plastic mermaids in the glass. It was all very classy, and sophisticated entertainment for a 6 year old. You can imagine my disappointment when I finally stepped into a real nightclub a decade later...
Anyway, despite my cassette tape copy of The Immaculate Collection being played to the point of disintegration I’d never heard True Blue before, due to being too young to be aware of it when it was released and it being omitted from The Immaculate Collection. Also my Dad’s friend Barry didn’t have the CD for me to copy, which at the age of 6 is where most of my Madonna cassettes came from.
Eventually my sister bought the album for me for my birthday and it was a revelation. Every track is a winner but if I had been captured singing Timmy style into my banana at that age it would definitely have been to Open Your Heart (or Live To Tell, I was a very morose child).
To this day it’s still my dream to be the little boy Madonna dances with in the Open Your Heart video after escaping her job at the the peep show (those pervs could’ve saved themselves a buck if they’d just waited a couple of years for her book). Now that I’m about a foot taller than her it might look a bit weird, so I guess I’ll have to settle for the magic of Photoshop…
